Sunday Funday: Embracing Family Life in Camarillo

School is back in session here in Camarillo, CA. Our district tends to start a little later than others in Ventura County, partly to keep Las Posas Road clear for the public schools. After three years here, I’m still getting to know the streets. More often than not, I find my way by “marker stores.” Not the most sophisticated system, but it works.

The past few days have been about getting things organized at home. Since we rent, we keep our setup flexible—nothing anchored or permanent. Do I imagine owning this place someday? Sure. Could it happen? Maybe. But for now, the owner isn’t interested in selling, and we’re simply grateful to live here. This community has been such a gift—kind, steady, and refreshingly old-fashioned. For us, coming from the pace of Los Angeles, it’s been nothing short of healing.

Those of you who know me know I’m always mindful about where my money goes. I try to put it toward the kids first, which doesn’t leave much left for me. That’s why homemade has become the key to just about everything in our house—even bagels. Sunday afternoon turned into a baking project, and by the end of it we had four kinds cooling on the counter: blueberry, cinnamon raisin, jalapeño & cheddar cheese, and strawberry. Never once did I imagine myself making bagels from scratch, but there I was, cranking them out one after another.

As for the rest of the kitchen, I keep what I call my “everyday pantry”—pasta, cereal, school snacks, lunch and bento boxes, water bottles, even the dog food and treats. Then there’s the second pantry in the laundry room, where I tuck away all the “magic ingredients” I rely on when it’s time to pull dinner together.

That’s my system. Simple, imperfect, but it works for us. I’d love to hear how you make it work in your home.
